Vignettes: Banking On It

Wednesday, April 16, 2014

Hi everyone!

Just a very quick mid-week post about a funny incident from today.

I went out to lunch with my friend and co-worker B today. We chatted about various matters, among them my comfort level with finally being full-time. He remarked on how much happier I clearly was, and how at ease I seemed.

I agreed, mentioning how amazed I was that up until last July I had never so much as been out of the house as myself. Now, barely nine months later, I have been full-time for four months (as of this past Sunday - a fact that I totally missed until just now!). The dysphoria vanished as soon as I was living as myself, just as my friends had promised me. I am, simply, happily, me. Nothing more, nothing less.

I also commented on how odd it can be at times. I feel like myself inside, at long last. And I know on some level I look different than he did, even if I really can't see it when I look in the mirror. It can be difficult to articulate, but there is definitely some dissonance between what I know and what my brain perceives. B nodded and said that made sense to him, adding that he suspected that would change with time.

And I soon had an experience to speed that process up a bit. :D

After lunch, I asked if we could swing by my bank so I could deposit a check, and B, good friend that he is, said of course. (My offer to buy him a cup of coffee probably didn't hurt my chances either. lol)

B accompanied me to the bank, and gentleman that he is, insisted on stopping me when I tried to open the door for us and instead held it open for me. Yes, I enjoyed it. :D

I filled out my deposit ticket and waited in line. A teller I didn't recognize came out after a minute or two, smiled and called us over. I returned her smile, said hello, and handed her the check and deposit slip, as well as my debit card and driver's license.

I fiddled about in my pocketbook while she processed the paperwork; B, as is his way, waited patiently. I glanced up a few moments later when I realized I wasn't hearing her typing on her keyboard.

She was looking at my debit card and license with a puzzled expression.

"I'm sorry, Miss... are you depositing this for your husband?"

Whoops. :#)

For various logistical reasons, I have not been able to get into Boston to probate court to get my name changed legally - which means my identification - including my debit card and driver's license - still bear his name. And in the case of my license, his photo.

I apologized (without blushing too much for a change) and explained that no, that was me - emphasis on "was." Her eyes widened, then, smiling, she said, "'Was' is right!"

As she finished processing the transaction, she said she never would have guessed unless I had told her that I was the person on the license. We chatted amiably for a minute or two about changing names and other matters. When she finished, she handed me back my receipt, wished us both a good afternoon, and wished me luck.

B, highly amused, waited until we reached the door to speak.

"Well, I don't think she had any trouble seeing you for who you are, Cass."

Apparently not. :D

I took the photo at the top of the post in the afternoon; it is no great shakes (it was rainy and windy, hence the crazy hair), but I like both my new dress and the hoodie with the fur trim (not real, needless to say).

Getting to wear something cute that I really like makes even a mediocre day much brighter. Lord knows I never thought that when I was trying to be a boy.

As I told R afterwards, "Have I mentioned how much I love being a girl?"

Not often enough - not often enough. :-p

Not that I need an excuse, but here's a Beatles song that fits:

And one more, since the 15th of April is the day taxes are due here in the States:

Fun fact: the blistering guitar solos are courtesy of Paul! He was, and is, a phenomenal musician...

Hi all. Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. :c)

I'm feeling a bit better after taking the week off. Still tired, which is to be expected, I suppose. I have quite a bit I need to process on a number of fronts from the past few weeks. It may also be from the time of year as much as anything else.

Hopefully things will slowly improve in the coming weeks. I hope that is the case. I will do what is within my power to make it so.

I have several fairly long, rather serious posts to write, but I thought I would post a short one about a funny moment from Thursday evening. :c)

No Regrets

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

From the moment I came out to my parents nearly six months ago, I have known that it was simply a matter of time until the final confrontation would begin.

That confrontation started last night.

And it is going to be very ugly.

Read Socks

Saturday, November 2, 2013

The last few days have been quite emotional. The entire week, really.

Much of it was a reaction to good news, or to happy circumstances, in the early part of the week, peaking on Wednesday evening as the Red Sox won the World Series.

I watched as they put an exclamation point to their remarkable, joyous season - and, simultaneously, felt hot tears streaming down my face.

I felt quiet pride for their achievement - and almost unbearable grief at the same time.

And I wasn't completely sure why.

I'm still not, to be honest.

But I am trying, with the help of some dear friends, to untangle the knot of emotions I feel.

I have SO much to write about.

So much I need to write about.

Some of it is quite upbeat. (Much of it, in fact.)

But some of it is also dark, and melancholy.

I will write about it all. Doing so helps me process what I am feeling. And why. (That last part is the trickiest.)

It is intense, and it is emotional - both pleasant and not-so-pleasant.

But as I told April last night, I would rather feel intensely - even painful feelings - than be numb, as I was for most of my life.

Because that is how I know I am leaving "him" behind, and growing into myself.

But all of that can wait for the next few posts - which includes some not-insignificant news in Cass's little corner of the world. So please stay tuned.

Before I delve into those murky waters, however, I want to share a happy story that took place on - you guessed it - Wednesday. :c)

Vignettes: Passing Inspection

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

I wound up taking a sick day today, alas.

But it wasn't *all bad, as it turned out. :c)

Vignettes: Checked Out

This was an interesting day from start to finish. It started off with a yow... and ended with a wow. :c)

First, the yow.

(Actually, the yows.)

Vignettes: Brilliant Disguise

Friday, October 11, 2013

Thought I would dash off a quick post about a recent chat I had via text with my co-worker/friend R.

Pretending to be "him" is becoming increasingly difficult as I progress in my transition. The GD takes a toll, as any of you who are full-time can no doubt attest.

Still, I am doing a good job of maintaining the pretense.

Although it turns out that ain't necessarily so!

:c)

Vignettes: Sign Language

Another of my shorter posts while I work on the longer one(s). :c)

As I have mentioned, I work at my company's new office, which is a fair distance from both the main office and my home. In fact, it is more than double the commute to the main office from my home. I dislike driving to begin with, so the extra time in my car is unwelcome.

(As an aside, I hereby offer a formal apology to my sister April and her fellow gearhead Stace; no doubt they consider my remarks to be blasphemy, if not outright heresy. ;-p)

To make matters worse, there have been a seemingly never-ending series of construction projects on my route for most of this year. My commute time in some cases would be more than double its normal, and already considerable, length.

Fortunately, most of them seem to have run their course with the arrival of fall.

All but one - on the two lane road leading to my office.

Vignettes: Newport Picture-Palooza!

Thursday, August 1, 2013

Greetings and salutations, one and all!

Just wanted to post more pics from my weekend in Newport, both of the performers I saw and some slightly less unkempt (I hope) shots of myself. lol

Follow along below the jump!

Vignettes: Vacation!!!

Wednesday, July 31, 2013

Greetings from my long-awaited, and badly needed, vacation! I got back late Monday evening from the Newport Folk Festival, which was wonderful as always.

I plan to write a longer post about my experiences, because in addition to wanting to share some of my impressions of the performers I saw, I want to write about what was an important weekend in my transition:

I spent the entire weekend as myself for the first time.

:-p

Being Me

Friday, July 19, 2013

Hi all!

Here's a late night, I-am-too-tired-to sleep post for you.

I have been fighting a minor stomach bug off and on the past few weeks.

And it is pavement-meltingly hot and humid here, and will be until Saturday. (The ol' hair product is getting a serious workout this week, I can assure you!)

But mostly, I am simply worn out.

Thankfully, my vacation starts one week from today. Yea!!!!

So... on to the point of this post.

As I noted in a recent post, I have most definitely passed a significant point in my transition:

I now, at long last, see me.

I mean, really see me.

It was, and is, amazing.

Vignettes: "Aww... she's a girl!!!"

Saturday, June 22, 2013

I have had an interesting week - in a good way - on both the work and personal fronts.

In fact, it would be fair to say I had an epiphany of sorts, courtesy of two unwitting catalysts.

I will write a post about this over the weekend. In fact, I have started it twice already and had to scrap it because of ongoing developments/realizations.

All I will say for now is that I have changed markedly - and for the better - since I came out to my parents less than two weeks ago.

Or perhaps it is more accurate to say that since that milestone day am I slowly realizing that these changes have been taking place under the surface for some time.

In either circumstance it is quite gratifying, as you can imagine.

Stay tuned for more... but in the meantime, on to the matter at hand!

Hiding(?) In Plain Sight

Saturday, April 27, 2013

Today was a good day, for several reasons.

In addition to being a Friday, I was finally over the after-effects of a somewhat unpleasant migraine that bothered me off and on from Sunday night through Wednesday.

I've had them in the past, and each time it was an indication that I needed to get my eyes checked. This is no different. I have an appointment in about two weeks - and yes, I'm asking about Lasik. :c)

(I updated the profile pic on "his" Facebook profile a few days ago.

(I received several joshing comments about how long my hair is getting :-p... along with several expressing surprise I wasn't wearing my glasses.

(I replied that I had simply forgotten I didn't have them on - which was the truth - and that I was looking into Lasik.

(One long-time friend replied, "YOU are considering Lasik?!? I don't believe it!!! Any other surprises to share with your public?"

(My reply? "You have no idea." lol)

But I digress. I feel better, albeit tired, after three nights of migraine-induced wooziness.

And I received yet another reminder that I may be further ahead in my transition than I realized. :c)

Shock and Awe

Saturday, April 20, 2013

I have two other posts ready to go, but I MUST post what happened less than an hour ago. This is a first - and a doozy. :c)

Progress Takes Many Forms II

Sunday, April 7, 2013

As I mentioned in my previous post, I had not one, but two of those "oh wow" moments we all come to treasure during our transition today.

The first happened at home.

The second came barely 30 minutes later. :c)

Androgynous

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

Had to post this quick hit about a funny remark my friend S made at work today. :c)

After an early meeting we went downstairs for coffee, as we often do, and caught up on out-of-office matters. S related details of her weekend first (she had a lot of fun, in case you're wondering), and then asked how mine was.

I told her the story I posted about on Monday, and we shared a good laugh. ("That is so 'totally' you, Cass!" she said.)

Then I mentioned the running tallies I kept during the weekend, including:

Number of times I blushed (when I mentioned that my dreams have been particularly vivid lately, causing J to ask what - or who - I was dreaming about): 1 lol

Number of items I kicked, bumped, tripped on, or knocked over: 4

Number of times I spilled coffee: 2 (once Saturday evening, once Sunday morning; I am equally clumsy on both days)

Number of times I was addressed as one of the following by toll booth attendants - a) Ma'am; b) Miss; c) Hon/Miss: 3

Steph laughed at that last item. Then she asked off-handedly what I was wearing when I was driving to and from T & J's house.

"Oh, I was dressed androgynously, I guess," I said.

She looked at me for a moment.

S: "So you were dressed normally, then?"

(Note: I'm still in boy mode at work.)

Me: "Huh?"

S: "Cass... you always look androgynous now."

(long pause)

C: "Oh."

lol

Thus, I once again demonstrate my remarkable inability to grasp what apparently is blatantly obvious to... well, everyone! :c)

This also gives me an excuse to post a great tune from what is, hands-down, one of the best albums of the Eighties -  Let It Be, by The Replacements:

I was too young to get into clubs when Let It Be came out, a matter not helped by the fact that I looked like I was about 12 years old at the time. (I was routinely carded at R-rated movies until I was 31, if you can believe it.)

However, I was lucky enough to see them twice on the Tim tour, in 1986. Both times they were drunken, shambling, barely coherent affairs... and both were absolutely, transcendently glorious. :c)

Long live The Replacements!!!

Hair Apparent

Sunday, March 24, 2013

So, another super-busy week is in the books.

Follow me for details of seven days that started off less than perfectly and ended up with me having yet another goofy smile on my face for what felt like hours. :c)

Silly Grin :c)

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Greetings and salutations, one and all!

I have *so* much to write about - some really exciting things too! - but not enough time at the moment. That said, I wanted to share a moment from Monday morning that, as the title says, left me with a goofier than usual grin afterwards. If such a thing is possible!

That Voice Again

Thursday, March 14, 2013

Just a brief post as I unwind from a long day, concerning encouraging observations about my progress from two different people.

Hat Happy

Friday, February 8, 2013

Just a quick post about another "whoa" moment, while I continue to chip away at those longer ones I've been promising. No, seriously, I am!

Anyway, the details await beneath the fold!
